A Bit Random

Large tracts of Epping Forest - which sort of sprawls over West Essex and East London - have historic Rights of Common Grazing.

This means that your bus ride to work or school can be seriously delayed by COWS IN THE ROAD. (Have you ever tried to get a cow to move who doesn't *want* to move?)

It also means that you can, in some parts of the county, get home to discover cows eating whatever plants you have in your front garden. Andcows get on the cricket pitch and/or football/hockey fields of various schools.

And when walking in the forest, or over Chingford Plains (etc) you can suddenly be surprised! by a cow. (Some of the grasslands grow to easily over four feet and some as high as five feet, so you don't always get warning before There Is A Cow!)

Does this mean Collared might find a cow in the middle of the fete?

Yes. They might. There have been cows on the golf courses before. I believe they even invested in electrified fencing to keep them out (though don't quote me on that).

And of course, where there are cows, there are also cow pats.

We used to get cows in our gardens DESPITE the fact that there wasn't common land and there was just a field next door.

I have nothing substantive to contribute to this exchange, but am dropping in to register my extreme amusement at the idea that you don't always get a warning before There Is A Cow!

We were walking over Chingford, my Mum, younger brother and I and I am rather short (5'2") which they are not (Mum's 5'7", John's 6'4") so the grass was pretty much up to my eye level and though there was a path through it it was winding.

So I'm walking along, go around a bend - AND I AM FACE TO FACE WITH A COW.

Apparently the noise I made was most amusing. :)
