Strawberry Jam for Tea

Did anyone who didn't go to my primary school ever sing "He ain't gonna jump no more!"??

Because every time I hear or read that Douglas-ian line from Cabin Pressure about there being jam for tea I can't help but hear the song.

1. He jumped from forty thousand feet without a parachute,
He jumped from forty thousand feet without a parachute,
He jumped from forty thousand feet without a parachute,
And he ain't gonna jump no more!

Chorus
Gory, gory what a hellova way to die
With your head upon the runway and your feet up in the sky!
Gory, Gory what a hellova a way to die
And he ain't gonna jump no more

2. He landed on the runway like a blob of strawberry jam (repeat as first verse)

3. Blood and gore flew everywhere like blobs of strawberry jam,

4. They scraped him off the runway and they sent him home to Mum

5. She put him on the mantlepiece for everyone to see

6. The pilots at the airfield all had strawberry jam for tea

Yup I have heard a version which had a name in it for the one who fell out of the plane too.

Ooooh! Never heard that version. But glad it's not just me who remembers singing this on coach trips.

Did you also sing the version of "Ten in the Bed" where when "one fell out" he'd bump his head and some internal organ (a different one each verse) would fall out?

That sounds similar to a rhyme we had- I wonder if they're derived from the same source? Ours didn't have body parts but it does have falling out of the bed and bumping one's head. Tell me if your "Ten in the bed" scans similarly to this:

Ten little monkeys jumping on the bed
One fell out and bumped his head
Mama called the doctor and the doctor said-
"No more monkeys jumping on the bed!"

Nine little...
etc.

It doesn't, no.

There were ten in the bed
And the little one said
"Roll over! Roll over!"
So they all rolled over and one fell out
He bumped his head and gave a shout
(OR he bumped his head and his X fell out)
Please remember to tie a knot in your pyjamas
Single bed are only made for 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9

Nine in the bed and the little one said
etc

[My Dad slept four to a bed with three of his brothers as a child]

I knew a rhyme very similar to this one as a kid.

There were ten in the bed
And the little one said
"Roll over! Roll over!"
So they all rolled over and one fell out

There were nine in the bed... (etc)

It just skips the bumping his head bit or x falling out bit. *shrug*

Hee. Yeah, we had that version too, hence the question being whether anyone else knew the version with the "he bumped his head" bit.

But good to know that at least some Americans might get the reference, should I use it. :D

Thinking about it, though, that seems not unlike

Ten little ghosties all dressed in pink
Tried to get to heaven on the end of a sink
But the sink chain was broken down they all fell
They couldn't get to heaven so they all went to...

Nine little ghosties all dressed in red
Tried to get to heaven on the end of a bed
But the bed-knob was broken down they all fell
They couldn't get to heaven so they all went to...

(Colours and methods changed with each verse - blue:loo, and I can't remember them all at this distance...)

I've never heard that song, but it's not sung to the tune of Battle Hymn of the Republic, is it? The scansion seems right, but I didn't realize the tune was used for parody in the UK the way it is here (an astonishing number of lyricists have used the tune).

Oh yes! :)

We also had "Glory, glory Alleuia! Teacher hit him with a ruler!" to the tune

Ha! Us too. It's amazing how far these things spread!
