Bits and Bobs

writersblock is back!

And the first question is strangely apt given my recent 70s/80s nostaligia and The Professionals fandom. :)

There's a lot of nostalgia around old franchises coming back right now. Movies, TV shows, even action figures! What's something from your childhood that you wish would come back? Why?

Heh. :D Thing is, Pros never really went away and Lord knows I have *no* desire for them to make a film or re-make *now*. I want Martin, Lewis and Gordon, thank you very much, and only Martin is still with us, except on DVD and ITV4. (Gordon's war films and Prime of Miss Jean Brodie days are often on (not to mention ITV3 repeating the whole of Upstairs, Downstairs not so long ago) and I've seen several of Martin's old films on Movies4Men and MovieMix, but no LC as yet. ::sadface:: And Martin with Russian and American accents is a bit surreal IMO. I found The Hound of the Baskervilles actually unwatchable. I know Henry Baskerville was an American but Martin sounded like he had been badly dubbed. Even if his three-piece suits and "American" hats were kinda cute. ;) )

Also, in one of those strange coincidences, msmoat rec'ed There's an Old Mill... (by my fave comfort-read O. Yardley) only two days before quarryquest posted this pic of a holiday let Norfolk Mill. :D (Though that isn't the one O. Yardley had in mind. With the proximity of Aylesham, it seems like Cawston Road Tower Mill though that was not a holiday let in the 80s... Artistic license or has anyone found the actual Mill?)

Oh and two little things, as I'm here:

(1) I've seen a lot in fic about Cowley's use of booze as a pain killer without seeing the (to me) obvious point: with any chronic injury prone to giving gyp, half your problem is muscle spasm around the site of the injury itself. Alcohol is not brilliant as a pain-killer, actually, (taking enough to numb pain has the same side-effects as prescription pain-killers, on both your liver and your cognitive functions) but as a non-prescription (muscle) relaxant, it *is* excellent. :D

(2) Is it me, or are there a dearth of fics mentioning Bodie's relationships with those two great Winter Warmers of the North West (also beloved of London school dinners and canteens) Lancashire Hot Pot and Scouse?

Thanks - but I'd already found that site! I found the Cawston Road mill I linked to above, through it. :D

Thanks for your snapshot of the Burnham Overy Staithe mill, though - that brought back happy memories of holidays in Norfolk (2014 is the first year I haven't even managed a day trip into Norfolk! ::sadface::) and driving through and around the Burnhams. I love all the old mills that are still standing in East Anglia! :D

I'm trying to "find" a mill from a specific fic - with a few Norfolk place and river names to go by - and I'm not even sure the Mill in the story is a real place, you know? As I said, there's one that looks likely - but it wasn't a holiday home at the time of the fic, which again could be the author just having fun, rather than referencing a real place.
