Odd Job

I never knew either of my grandfathers - Mum's Dad died the month before she married my Dad and Dad's Dad died four years before they even met. But both of my parents talk about their Dads a lot. Naturally.

Talking about her Dad, Mum segued into talking about his business partner - Granddad's French polishing and furniture restoration business was in shared premises (shop front and workrooms behind) with a friend of his who sold and tuned pianos.

Firstly the introduction of small "apartment-sized" pianos in the 1960s and the Russian "commissaire or attache or something at the Embassy" who ordered 100 of them through Grandad's partner (ensuring that, as well as the shop, his house *and* Grandad's ground-floor maisonette were full of pianos!). These pianos were to be shipped down the Thames, then loaded onto a container ship and travel through the North Sea and round the whole Baltic Sea to Russia. God alone knows what state their tuning was in after all that! Western Decadence gets them every time! ;)

Then Diana Rigg (now a DBE, then "Emma Peel" in The Avengers) who came into the shop and bought a piano. And then asked if a 60s psychadelic pattern could be painted on it. "Of course, Madam." (Never mind the travesty of a French polisher and furniture restorer being asked to *paint* wood.)

And then, pleased with that paint job, she asked if they could do a matching paint job on another piece of furniture, if she brought it in. "Of course, Madam."

They didn't ask what. A sideboard? Bookcase? Coffee table? What other furniture would you normally have in the same room as your piano.

She brought in a loo seat.

Heh. I am still trying to work out why you would want your loo seat to match your piano. Was the piano for her bathroom?!

And I don't think I can ever look at Dame Diana in the same way again!
