Given my drawing and painting abilities (INability?) as seen on LiveJournal and DeviantArt does ANYONE think I have enough skill to volunteer as a BB Artist?

Unlike writing, since my drawings (graphite or coloured pencil) are A5 or A4, they take a single (albeit sometimes long enough to leave me immobile after) session. Watercolours, with drying time, sometimes take two sessions, sometimes one.

Even if I did a watercolour cover image and a couple of drawings, it's not the same time/confidence committment as writing, finishing and editing a fic. I *could* do it, physically.

The question is: am I good enough?

I no longer ask even good friends if they'd like an illustration for their fic (though I may try for my own sake, rather than theirs) because when I *have* in the past, people either wanted an illustration of a scene beyond my powers (I can either do a wide-scale scene OR a portrait, not a portrait that fits in a wide-scale scene) or even - without so much as a "thank you" - got, "that wasn't how it looked inside my head". It probably wasn't how it looked inside mine, either, mate. i never claimed to be a professional quality illustrator/cover-artist.

Given ALL THAT... but given that I feel as if I'm kind of neglecting Pros fandom given I have pulled out of the BB TWICE now and posted two parts of a fic I *still* haven't finished here way back in 2015 and I've made several MCU relevant posts recently... I'd love to DO SOMETHING.

It's a genuine question. Most of my "art" posts get very few responses - if that's because you think I'm too crap to share, PLEASE, just tell me that. (And I'll stop sharing to LJ and DW and go back to DA.) I honestly want to know.

Looking at my pics, would you feel screwed if THAT'S what you got from you BB artist? Because I have looked at BBs, in multiple fandoms,  in the past and thought, "That writer deserved better art". I'd hae like the devil anyone, least of all any writer I was paired with, to think/feel THAT.

Help? Advise me? Tell me to bugger off? All honest responses welcome.

Too Crap to Share ?

I went and had a look - the good news is, the first thing I spotted was Bodie/Mr C and I recognised him straight away, without having to read the label.

I personally like the landscapes better than the portraiture, but I would happily read a story with either appended - or both.

I've been emboldened by managing to meet a couple of MFU deadlines myself - Been a bit poorly for the last five weeks - unable to do much of anything - but I'm now building up my hours at work again, and got told by someone today that I've noticeably improved in just the last few days - so I'm hoping for a productive Prosy bank holiday :0)

I'm not sure how the art thing works with BB - but I think you get more choice about subject matter than just being asked to draw 'x'. I think you have more room to interpret - so more artistic freedom.

If you haven't already, maybe you could have a look at the BB journal and check out the art posts to see what sort of thing folk posted previously? And then maybe ask a Mod what the rules are around the subject matter, so you could be sure about what was expected?

And I, for one, would be happy to see you active in Pros again :0)

I like your landscapes best, but your portraiture is certainly better than I've had in some past BBs, though not in that fandom. I would be happy with your work as a BB writer. Some people are picky bastards though, and you'll never make everyone happy!

Landscape art is rarer than portrait art in BBs, and if you pick the right story, you could perhaps do a landscape with a couple of distant figures?

My impression is that it's hard to get good feedback for art unless you either have a LOT of social capital (in which case people will share stuff not so much because they think it's brilliant, as because they think of the artist as a friend) or if you are near-pro-quality, OR, if you are drawing something that has a lot of feeeeeeeelings and backstory to it. Feelings stuff and a title that makes people feel things will do a lot for art.

When I've done art for BBs, the author has usually just given me access to their draft and I've come up with the ideas. I've not yet had someone request a specific scene, but that might be down to my skills, of course!

When I've written for BBs, I've given the artist access to my draft and suggested a few ideas. Artists can be pretty flaky in BBs, so I tend to count it a win to get art at all!

Honest response: Yes! Totally.

This is a great idea because it lets you participate in a way that is both creative and doable for your current situation. Yay! That's a win-win. I have written BBs in Pros, of course, and I'd be happy with your art work accompanying my story. That would be fabulous. So, yes, go for it!

ETA: I did review your art work before saying this. *g* Just so you know it's not just me being generally encouraging. I'm being, er, specifically encouraging!

Oh, hell, yes!!! Totally go for it - blimey - that's proper artwork you do. And I'm not being polite!

I'm sure absolutely any writer would be chuffed as nuts to have something drawn specifically for their story by you.

I would say, just based on your Sherlock: DOOO EEEET. :-)

As for process: yes, you have vast leeway to decide *how* to interpret the story. I've had one artist ask me if I had any thoughts, and I've had input into drafts and such; but it's pretty much been the artist who figures out what to capture in the story. I've been happy with all of them, and most times the artist has come back with an original take, done in a way I would have never come up with on my own.

I agree with my fellow BB Mod golden_bastet that you should definitely join in! Your artwork is absolutely what an author would be very happy to accompany their story. I know I would be.

As for rules - a list of story summaries are posted on or around July 9th. You pick your top choices in order of preference and submit to the Mods. We sort it all out, trying very hard to give everyone their 1st or 2nd choices (not always possible!). We will then send you a copy of the author's rough draft and you are free to do your art work any way the story inspires you. You and the author can work together on ideas - or you can work separately. The Mods are always available to help out where needed.

We'd be happy to have you join in the 2017 BB!
